Over the past five decades, the world has seen exponential economic growth that has built upon the extraction and use of natural resources, based on linear economic models that follow a “take, make, dispose” pathway. “Siloed” and “project-by-project” approaches to planning that consider infrastructure assets and sectors in isolation of others often result in inefficient service delivery. Integrated, systems-level approaches can help to increase the resource efficiency of infrastructure as a key driver of sustainable development.
