Event: Pacific Community Workshop on the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development

The Pacific Community Workshop on the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) will bring together around 50 ocean leaders, champions and key stakeholders to advance discussions on the issues identified at the First Global Planning Meeting in May in Denmark.

Plenary and working groups will facilitate regional interdisciplinary discussions across sectors such as ocean science and technology, ocean policy and sustainable development, business and industry, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society, and donors and foundations to identify concrete deliverables and partnerships to meet the Decade’s six societal objectives:

  • A Safe Ocean;
  • A Sustainable and Productive Ocean;
  • A Transparent and Accessible Ocean;
  • A Clean Ocean;
  • A Healthy and Resilient Ocean; and
  • A Predicted Ocean.

The Pacific Community Workshop will aim to identify: knowledge gaps and regional ocean science priorities for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Samoa Pathway on sustainable development for small island developing States (SIDS); existing and potential relevant partnerships, networks and initiatives; priorities in capacity development and training; priority themes and topics to be addressed by the Decade; and other regional initiatives and meetings to be aligned with the Decade.

The workshop is hosted by the Pacific Community (SPC) and co-organized with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (IOC-UNESCO) as the coordinating body for the Decade.
